Moisturiser or Serum First? Is there a particular order for skincare?

Moisturiser or serum first?” That’s a common question, and yes, there is a recommended order for your skincare routine!

A lot of people still have misconceptions about what product goes first, and whether it even matters. It absolutely does. Following the correct skincare order helps to maximise absorption by your skin and prevent further water loss.

The simple rule? Go from thinner consistency to thicker consistency. This means using lighter products before the heavier ones. For instance, if you’re using an oil-based serum, you should typically end your routine with a cream-based moisturiser to help seal it all in.

Common Skincare Mistakes

One common mistake we see is misting your face in the middle of the day over moisturiser, thinking it helps. But actually, this can draw water out of your skin, leaving it feeling even more dehydrated! This happens because the mist (like a toner) doesn’t have a moisturiser to seal it in and hold onto that water.

Always seal in with a moisturiser after applying a toner or mist.

In your routine, you should always have a humectant (like a toner or some serums) that brings hydration to your skin, and an occlusive product (like a moisturiser) to seal that moisture in.
